The Movement to Ban Cellphones in Schools Comes to LA
In a move mirroring the actions of other educational districts, the Los Angeles Unified School District recently voted to ban cell phones and social media usage during school hours. Schools will use Yondr pouches to lock phones so that students will not be able to access them until they leave the building. This initiative aims to enhance educational engagement and reduce distractions, promoting a more focused learning environment.
Here in Denton, we see a similar need. Distractions from mobile devices not only affect academic performance but also impact social interactions and mental health among students. Our advocacy group, Phone-Free Denton ISD, supports similar measures to foster a more conducive learning atmosphere.
How to Get Involved:
1. Educate Yourself and Others: Understanding the benefits and potential challenges of such a policy is the first step. Sharing information and discussing the impacts with fellow community members can build a stronger case.
2. Join Phone-Free Denton ISD: By joining our group, you can stay updated with the latest developments and participate in discussions and planning sessions.
3. Speak Up: Attend school board meetings or write to local educators and board members to express your support for phone-free policies in our schools.
